Indiana Launches Mental Health Pilot Program For Justice-Involved Populations
On November 6, 2020, the State of Indiana announced the launch of pilot programs to increase mental health service access for justice-involved populations in Marion and Vanderburgh counties. The pilot programs will provide jail-based or outpatient competency restoration for individuals charged with crimes, but who were found incompetent to stand trial (IST) due to mental illness, and who are awaiting placement in the state psychiatric hospital network for competency restoration treatment. Through the pilots, competency restoration services will be provided in three new, and different settings: jails, the community, and private inpatient psychiatric settings.
