Indiana's Pinnacle hospital received the top ranking for cost efficiency in the United States. For this ranking, cost efficiency was defined as having the lowest 30- and 90-day mortality rates at the lowest per person costs for Medicare beneficiaries. The cost efficiency ranking was based on Medicare hospitalization claims data for 2016 through 2018.

Among hospitals with average 30-day mortality rates, Medicare costs ranged from $9,000 to $27,000 per beneficiary. If all hospitals analyzed achieved the outcomes and costs as the best 750 hospitals for cost efficiency, the researchers estimated that Medicare would save $8 . . .
