Maryland Closed Two Juvenile Commitment Centers Due To Declining Admissions
Due to declining admissions, the Maryland Department of Juvenile Services (DJS) closed two juvenile commitment centers at the end of June 2020. The centers are the J. DeWeese Carter Youth Facility in Kent County, which only serves girls; and the Meadow Mountain Youth Center in Garrett County. DJS moved 10 children (three girls and seven boys) at the two facilities to other treatment centers. The more than 80 DJS employees at the two facilities were offered jobs elsewhere in the system.
