Maryland Suicide Deaths During The COVID-19 Pandemic Doubled Among Black Residents But Dropped By Half Among White Residents
In Maryland, during the lock downs between March and May 2020 due to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, suicide deaths among Black residents doubled over the average over the previous three years. From March 5, 2020, to May 7, 2020, suicide deaths among Black residents averaged 0.344 per day, compared to 0.177 per day from 2017 to 2019. Among white residents during the March to May period in 2020, suicide deaths averaged 0.672 per day compared to 1.224 per day in 2017 to 2019.
