More Americans Are Underinsured In Terms Of Out-Of-Pocket Costs
In 2018 about 28% of American adults (ages 19 to 64) with employer-sponsored health coverage and 42% of those with individual coverage were underinsured in terms of the amount of their plan out-of-pocket costs compared to their household income. Since 2010, the greatest growth in the underinsured rate has occurred among Americans in employer-based health plans; in 2010 about 17% were underinsured compared to 28% in 2018.
