Over 10% Of Ontario Suicide Deaths Are Among People With Schizophrenia
About 11.7% of the 5,650 people who died of suicide in Ontario, Canada from January 2008 through December 2012 had been diagnosed with schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSD). Schizophrenia spectrum disorders include schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, or any psychotic disorder not otherwise specified. Of the remaining 4,987 non-SSD suicide deaths during the five-year period, about 22% (1,111 people) of those who died had been hospitalized for a serious mental illness (SMI), but not SSD. The remaining 68% (3,876 people) who died had not been diagnosed with SSD or a non-SSD SMI.
