Mortality After Kidney Transplant Twice As High With Care Through Medicare Compared To VA System
The five-year mortality rate for veterans who received care solely through Medicare after undergoing kidney transplantation was double that of those who received care through the Veterans Administration (VA) Health Care System. Those who received Medicare-only post-transplant care had an approximately 20% five-year mortality rate. Those who received VA-only post-transplant care had an approximately 11% mortality rate. Those who received care through both Medicare and the VA ("dual-care") for their post-transplant care had a 16% mortality rate. A total of 1,053 veterans died over five years of follow-up.
