On July 16, 2021, the New Jersey Department of Corrections (NJDOC) and Department of Education (NJDOE) agreed to improve special education services in New Jersey state prisons. Under the new policies, NJDOC will ensure that special education students in custody are identified and provided with individualized transition services, and that they are provided with at least four hours of instruction per day in a regular classroom setting. For each, Individualized Education Plans and Section 504 Plans will be developed and implemented according to the individual needs of each student.
