New York City Launches Youth Gun Violence Prevention Pilot; Youth Are Paid For Participation
In July 2021, the New York City Mayor’s Office of Criminal Justice began launching a pilot program based on the Advance Peace model to prevent youth gun violence. In this model, youth at high risk are paired with a mentor who provides the youth with support for achieving tangible goals for the next 18 months, such as obtaining a drivers' license or earning a GED. The participating youth receive a cash stipend of about $1,000 for each month they participate and advance toward their goals. They are eligible for bonuses when they reach their goals.
