Pennsylvania Raises Direct Care Worker Wages To $15 Per Hour Through $21 Million Investment

The Pennsylvania Department of Human Services has started implementing a wage increase for direct care workers (DCWs) serving older adults and people with disabilities through self-directed service programs. Approximately 8,500 DCWs are eligible to apply for wage increases that would raise hourly pay to $15 per hour. The current DCW wage averaged $13.50 per hour. Those who applied by May 8, 2026, were eligible for retroactive pay to January 1, 2026.

In self-directed service programs, wages are negotiated between the DCW and the individual employing them. DCWs provide in-home services to more than 7,700 . . .
