People With Dementia Receive Less Hospice Care In Their Final Months Than People Without The Disease

Dementia was associated with significantly less hospice during the final three months of life, with a 12.5% likelihood of hospice in the last month of life with dementia versus 17.3% without dementia. This is despite the fact that people with dementia functionally appear similar to those with other terminal illnesses for years prior to their deaths.
Using a linear model, dementia was also associated with less durable medical equipment, less home health care, and fewer office visits. There were not significant differences in the likelihood of hospitalization in the last 48 months with or without dementia.
