San Francisco County, California, Launches Conservatorship Expansion For People With Severe Substance Use Disorder
On January 1, 2024, the City and County of San Francisco became the first in the state to launch reformed policies for behavioral health conservatorship and involuntary treatment, and allow for conservatorship of people with severe substance use disorder. The reform is due to Senate Bill (SB) 43, which was signed on October 10, 2023. It goes beyond the existing Lanterman-Petris-Short (LPS) Act Mental Health Conservatorship that allows a county public conservator to ask a court to appoint a third party to direct care for up to one year for a person with a serious mental illness . . .
