Santa Clara County, California is finalizing a contract with a GEO Group subsidiary to be the first in the United States to use a new community corrections global positioning system (GPS) monitoring and tracking device that resembles a smartwatch in appearance. The new device, the BI VeriWatch, was developed by BI Incorporated, a wholly owned subsidiary of GEO Group. The VeriWatch has the same basic functionality of more commonly used monitoring devices worn on the ankle, plus it offers more services to support the wearer’s engagement with their parole officers.
