States With More Generous Autism Insurance Mandates Have More ABA Professionals & More Child Psychiatrists
From 2003 to 2017, states that enacted more generous autism insurance mandates experienced more growth in their workforce, compared to states with less generous mandates. These states had approximately 39% more board certified behavior analysts (BCBAs) who provide behavioral therapy, and 17% child psychiatrists, than states with less generous mandates. During this time period, 44 states introduced autism insurance mandates: an average of three states per year, which peaked in 2009 when seven states introduced laws.
