U.S. Population Living In Congregate Institutional Settings Dropped 6% Between 2010 & 2020; Prisons & Juvenile Detention Down, Nursing Homes Up
United States residents who are living in congregate institutional settings decreased about 6.0% (from 3,993,659 to 3,753,401) between 2010 and 2020. Residents in correctional facilities for adults decreased about 13.1% (from 2,263,602 to 1,967,297) and residents in juvenile facilities decreased about 41.8% (from 151,315 to 88,115). However, the population in nursing facilities and skilled nursing facilities increased about 8.3% (from 1,502,264 to 1,627,046).
