On May 10, 2021, Washington Governor Jay Inslee signed legislation that strengthened the Department of Children, Youth, and Families (DCYF) child welfare practices related to family preservation. Rules in the Keeping Families Together Act (HB 1227) will ultimately reduce the number of children removed from parents by an estimated half, and reduce the total number of children in the State’s child welfare system by an estimated half. Currently, DCYS currently vets roughly 125,000 calls of suspected abuse and neglect per year.
