Managing The Increasing Volume & Acuity Of Mental Health Referrals – A Discussion With Michael Stevens, Director Of Business Development, Lancaster Behavioral Health Hospital – An OPEN MINDS Circle Elite Roundtable December 9

GETTYSBURG, Pa. (November 21, 2021) – On December 9 at 1:00 p.m. (ET), OPEN MINDS will host the Circle Elite Roundtable, Capturing & Managing The Increasing Volume & Acuity Of Mental Health Referrals, for executives of health and human service organizations. The focus of this Circle Elite Roundtable will be on the challenges surrounding the increased volume and acuity of mental health referrals.

How has your organization been handling the lasting effects of COVID-19? There continues to be an increased stress on the behavioral health system due to the elevated number of mental health referrals. With concerns about the Delta variant and rising case numbers, the mental health referrals may not decrease anytime soon. This Circle Elite Executive Roundtable will feature OPEN MINDS Senior Associate, Erin Pressel and Lancaster Behavioral Health Hospital Director of Business Development, Michael Stevens, who will give an overview of how to effectively handle the increased volume through safety and training.

Michael will provide insights into how referrals have become more severe and how accepting new admissions have been impacted by staffing shortages—particularly medical staff. Erin and Michael will discuss how to educate and prepare staff to handle the increased workload, including how to modify intake and admission procedures. Additionally, they will breakdown the characteristics of mental health referrals during COVID as the cases are now more complex and varied. Lastly, they address how to measure and analyze the data that comes with the inflated referral volume.

“The number of adults who reported experiencing anxiety or depressive disorder increased from 10% in 2019 to 40% in 2020,” said OPEN MINDS Chief Executive Officer Monica E. Oss. “As the pandemic’s effects linger, we can expect an ongoing increase in mental health referral volume. Preparing your organization and adjusting your strategy will ensure you can properly serve your customers.”

Erin Pressel is an experienced executive with an expansive history in the human services industry focused on marketing and communications, referral development and management, business development and implementation of growth strategies, and strategic planning. In her previous role with Gaudenzia, Ms. Pressel was responsible for all aspects of strategy and business development near 100 programs across four states.

Mr. Stevens has more than 15 years of business development experience in the healthcare industry. Michael was part of the initial opening of Lancaster Behavioral Health Hospital in 2018. In his role, Michael is responsible for managing the census and referrals at the hospital. He also oversees community relations, marketing, and public relations to ensure the hospital is a valuable part of south-central Pennsylvania.
