The States Respond To Crisis
The 988 crisis line has been up and running for a little over a year. Owned by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and funded through two, five-year SAMHSA grants to the tune of $48 million (see National ‘988’ Lifeline For Mental Health Crisis Goes Live In July 2022), the program is at once national in its marketing, state-based in its funding, and local in its administration (see Vibrant and 988).
