Nursing Home Residents With No Personal Contacts During Pandemic Had 35% Higher Excess Mortality
In the early months of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Ontario, Canada, excess mortality was 35% higher among nursing home residents who had no personal contact with family or friends, compared to those who did have contact with family or friends. During COVID-19, there was a 57.8% relative increase (12.6 excess deaths per 1,000) in mortality in residents without family or friend contact, and a 17.1% increase (4.8 deaths per 1,000) in residents with family or friend contact.
