25% Of California Child Care Sites Closed; Low Enrollments & Higher Costs Challenge Sustainability
About 25% of California child care sites remain closed as of early July 2020, according to a report by the Center for the Study of Child Care Employment, University of California, Berkeley. Among the 75% that have reopened, the sites report that low enrollments and higher costs are challenging their ability to operate. The authors surveyed 953 child care sites from June 22 to July 1, 2020; the survey included family child care (FCC) homes and center-based child care provider organizations.
