As the use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools expands within long-term care workflows, the absence of clear standards and enforceable policy frameworks may create gaps in protections for older adults and family caregivers involved in the long-term care system, according to a recommendation report by the AARP Public Policy Institute. The report also notes that the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) does not apply to many health apps and services older adults regularly use, potentially leaving sensitive personal health data with limited consumer protections.
