Readmissions Cut By 42% For Alcohol-Related Hospital Stays When Medication Treatment Started At Discharge

The initiation of medication for alcohol use disorder (MAUD) at discharge was linked with a 42% decreased incidence of returning to the hospital within 30 days, compared to those who did not start MAUD at discharge. MAUD initiation was also tied with a 51% decreased incidence of an alcohol-related return to hospital. The risk of rehospitalization or death within 30 days was 18% lower among those who were discharged with MAUD compared to those who were not treated for alcohol use disorder.
