83% of General Hospitals Receive CMS Financial Penalties For High Readmissions
For fiscal year 2020, Medicare will impose penalties in the form of lower reimbursement rates on 83% of general hospitals which have high 30-day readmission rates. This equals to 2,583 of the 3,129 general hospitals evaluated in the Hospital Readmission Reduction Program. The penalties are projected to total $563 million.
The average penalty was a 0.71% reimbursement cut. Some 56 hospitals received the maximum penalty of 3%. Overall, 1,177 hospitals received a higher penalty than last year; 1,148 hospitals received a lower penalty than last year; and 64 hospitals received the same penalty as . . .
