CMS Proposes Establishing Medicare Coverage Of Intensive Outpatient Behavioral Health Programs
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has proposed establishing Medicare coverage for intensive outpatient programs (IOP) for mental health and addiction treatment. Currently, the Medicare program covers behavioral health services in a variety of settings— inpatient psychiatric hospitalizations, partial hospitalization programs (PHP), and outpatient therapeutic services. However, a gap exists for beneficiaries who require services more intensive than individual outpatient therapy visits, but less intensive than PHP services. The IOP services would be provided for at least nine hours per week, at two intensity levels: three services per day or four services per day.
