Dual Commercial-Medicare Health Coverage Declining Among Adults Age 65+
The percentage of adults aged 65 and older covered by both private health insurance and Medicare decreased from 47.9% in 2017 to 39.6% in 2022. During the same period the rate of older adults with Medicare coverage alone increased from 37.6% to 44.8%. The percentage of older adults who only had private coverage, and not Medicare, remained stable over time, at 4.9% in 2017 and 5.3% in 2022. About 9.2% of Medicare beneficiaries have other types of public health insurance through the government, such as TRICARE or Medicaid.
