Medicare Shared Savings Program ACOs Saved Medicare $1.66 Billion In 2021
The 477 accountable care organizations (ACOs) participating in the Medicare Shared Savings Program (MSSP) during 2021 saved Medicare $3.6 billion in 2021. About 58% of MSSP ACOs earned payments for their performance in 2021. After paying out about $2 billion in shared savings payments to the ACOs that earned bonuses, net MSSP savings totaled $1.66 billion in 2021. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) said this is the fifth consecutive year that the MSSP has generated overall savings.
