Homelessness in the U.S. increased 18% from 2023 to 2024. And the number of children experiencing homelessness increased 33% during the same time period—the highest increase across all age groups. These are among the key metrics in the recent report, State Of Homelessness: 2025 Edition.

Rising housing insecurity is due in part to the increasing prevalence of severely housing cost-burdened households, defined as spending 50% or more of their income on housing. Two out of three extremely low-income renter households, more than 7.2 million, are severely cost-burdened, and from 2022 to 2023, the number of these households increased in more than half of the states.
