Scenario-based planning has moved to the finance department. Finance teams that use structured scenario planning outperform their finance peers in several ways, according to the recent 2026 Association For Financial Professionals FP&A Benchmarking Survey Report.
Finance teams that use structured scenario planning—defined as the process of considering a range of circumstances and multiple potential futures—develop budgets in an average of 8.1 weeks, 11% faster than those who do not (9.2 weeks). Interestingly, this advantage does not extend to technology budgets.
More importantly, these finance teams demonstrate greater strategic alignment (+14%) and business alignment (+13%) than their peers. However, adoption of scenario-based planning remains low, with only 38% of organizations using the model.
