OPEN MINDS The Behavioral Health & Social Service Industry Analyst Industry Statistics Total benefit payments by Medicare to patients treated in psychiatric hospitals increased by approximately 25% from 1978 through 1987 after correcting for inflation. On a per capita basis, however, the overall increase was much smaller:  4.6% for the entire population. All of the increase in per capita terms was accounted for by the disabled, increasing 26.8%.
