OPEN MINDS The Behavioral Health & Social Service Industry Analyst Industry Statistic Ambulatory visits to physicians involving chemical dependency, either as a primary or a secondary diagnosis, make up only 0.3% of all physician visits. Surprisingly, most of these chemical dependency-related visits take place predominantly in the offices of physicians other than psychiatrists. Non-psychiatric physicians are also more likely to find chemical dependency to be a secondary diagnosis (to some physical ailment) than to be a primary diagnosis.
